Greenwashing
Greenwashing is the practice of making misleading or unsubstantiated claims about the environmental performance of a product, service, or organisation to appear more sustainable than reality.
What is Greenwashing?
Greenwashing ranges from vague claims (“eco-friendly” without evidence) to specific falsehoods (inaccurate emission figures). Regulatory action against greenwashing is increasing: the UK CMA’s Green Claims Code, the EU Green Claims Directive, and the ASA’s environmental claims guidance all set standards for substantiated environmental communications. For carbon claims specifically, organisations must ensure that emission figures are accurately calculated, reduction claims are based on real data, net zero and carbon neutral claims follow recognised standards, and offset claims meet quality criteria.
Practical Examples
A company claims to be “carbon neutral” based on cheap, low-quality offsets without demonstrating genuine emission reductions — a practice increasingly challenged by regulators.
The ASA bans an airline advertisement claiming “low emissions” because the claim was not adequately substantiated with data.
How Climatise Helps
Climatise provides accurate, auditable emissions data that substantiates environmental claims, helping organisations avoid greenwashing by grounding their communications in verified evidence.
