Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency means using less energy to deliver the same level of service, output, or comfort, reducing both costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

What is Energy Efficiency?

Energy efficiency is the most cost-effective decarbonisation measure available to most organisations. It reduces energy consumption without sacrificing output or comfort, lowering both utility bills and associated Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Common measures include LED lighting upgrades, building insulation, HVAC optimisation, motor and pump efficiency improvements, and process optimisation.

In the UK, the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) requires large enterprises to conduct energy audits every four years and identify efficiency opportunities. The Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) set minimum EPC ratings for commercial and domestic rented properties. Both regulations drive investment in energy efficiency.

Beyond regulatory compliance, energy efficiency improvements typically offer payback periods of 1–5 years, making them commercially attractive as well as environmentally necessary. For organisations reporting under SECR, reduced energy consumption directly lowers the emissions figure in the Directors’ Report.

Practical Examples

1

A hotel chain invests in LED lighting across 50 properties, reducing lighting energy consumption by 65% and saving £400,000 annually.

2

A manufacturing facility optimises its compressed air system, reducing energy waste by 30% and cutting its Scope 2 emissions by 200 tCO₂e per year.

3

An office landlord upgrades building insulation and installs smart HVAC controls, improving the EPC rating from D to B and reducing gas consumption by 40%.

How Climatise Helps

Climatise tracks energy consumption across all sites and identifies efficiency opportunities by benchmarking against industry standards. The platform quantifies the emissions impact of efficiency improvements and monitors savings over time.
