The challenge
What education are facing
Multi-site data across 10-50+ schools
A MAT with 30 schools means 30 sets of energy bills, 30 different building types, and 30 site contacts who may or may not prioritise data collection. Aggregating this manually is a full-time job.
DfE mandate requires action
The Department for Education now mandates that all state-funded schools have a sustainability lead and a climate action plan. This isn't voluntary — it's a condition of funding.
SECR applies to large MATs
MATs that meet the SECR thresholds (250+ employees, £36m+ turnover) have a legal obligation to report. That covers most of the larger trusts and all Russell Group universities.
Student and staff commuting is hard to measure
Scope 3 from daily commuting across thousands of students and staff is one of education's biggest emission sources, but it's rarely measured because the data is so fragmented.
A MAT with 30 schools means 30 sets of energy bills, 30 different building types, and 30 site contacts — Climatise centralises it all into one emissions picture.
The solution
How Climatise helps
Centralised multi-site collection
One platform for all your schools or campuses. Each site uploads their own data; it rolls up automatically to trust or university level.
See this feature →School-by-school benchmarking
Compare emissions intensity across your estate. Identify which schools are using the most energy per pupil and target interventions.
See this feature →Automated SECR for qualifying MATs
If you meet the SECR thresholds, your report generates automatically from the data already in the platform.
See this feature →Commuting estimates
Scope 3 estimates for student and staff commuting using postcode data and mode-of-transport surveys. Defensible methodology without individual tracking.
Client story

Common questions
Education carbon reporting FAQ
SECR applies if your MAT meets at least 2 of 3 thresholds: 250+ employees, £36m+ turnover, or £18m+ balance sheet. Most MATs with 10+ schools meet these thresholds. Universities that are large employers also typically qualify.
The Department for Education requires all state-funded schools to appoint a sustainability lead and develop a climate action plan. This includes measuring energy use and working towards net zero. Climatise provides the measurement framework.
Climatise normalises data to your financial year regardless of when individual schools submit. Half-term and holiday energy patterns are captured in the monthly data, which the platform uses for year-round calculations.
