Verra (VCS)

Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) is the world’s largest voluntary carbon credit programme, certifying projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions.

What is Verra (VCS)?

Verra manages the VCS programme, which has issued over 1 billion carbon credits since its inception. VCS covers a wide range of project types including renewable energy, forestry and land use (REDD+), methane capture, and industrial efficiency. Verra credits are registered on a public registry and independently verified. The VCS Programme has come under increased scrutiny regarding the quality of some forestry credits, leading to methodology updates and enhanced standards.

Practical Examples

1

A REDD+ project protecting 100,000 hectares of tropical rainforest is certified under Verra VCS and issues carbon credits based on avoided deforestation emissions.

2

A landfill methane capture project in South America receives VCS certification and sells credits on the voluntary market.
