UK Net Zero Strategy
The UK Net Zero Strategy is the government’s plan for how the UK will achieve its legally binding target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
What is UK Net Zero Strategy?
Published in October 2021 and updated subsequently, the UK Net Zero Strategy sets out policies and proposals across all sectors of the economy: power, industry, heat and buildings, transport, natural resources, and greenhouse gas removals. Key commitments include a fully decarbonised power system by 2035, phasing out new petrol and diesel car sales by 2035, and significant investment in energy efficiency and low-carbon heating. The strategy provides the sectoral context within which businesses must plan their own decarbonisation.
Practical Examples
A building company aligns its construction standards with the Net Zero Strategy’s trajectory for zero-carbon new buildings.
A transport operator references the Net Zero Strategy’s fleet electrification timeline when planning its vehicle replacement schedule.
