Travel Emissions

Travel emissions are the greenhouse gases produced by all forms of business-related travel, including flights, rail, road, and hotel accommodation.

What is Travel Emissions?

Travel emissions encompass business travel (Scope 3 Category 6) and may include employee commuting (Category 7). For many service-sector organisations, travel is one of the most significant and actionable Scope 3 categories. Calculation involves applying DEFRA emission factors to distance, fuel consumption, or spend data by transport mode. Key factors include flight haul and class (business class is approximately 3x economy per passenger-km), vehicle type and fuel, and hotel stays by country.

Practical Examples

1

A consulting firm discovers that long-haul business class flights account for 60% of its total travel emissions, prompting a policy to restrict business class to flights over 8 hours.

2

A company reduces travel emissions by 40% through a combination of virtual-first meeting policy, rail-over-air rules for domestic routes, and economy-class default.
