Scope 3 Screening

Scope 3 screening is an initial assessment of all 15 Scope 3 categories to estimate their relative magnitude and identify which are material for detailed measurement.

What is Scope 3 Screening?

The GHG Protocol recommends screening all 15 Scope 3 categories before deciding where to invest in detailed measurement. Screening uses readily available data (financial spend, employee headcount, industry averages) and broad emission factors to produce order-of-magnitude estimates. Categories that are clearly immaterial (typically less than 1–5% of total) can be excluded from detailed reporting with justification.

Practical Examples

1

A company screens all 15 categories using spend data and finds that Categories 1 (purchased goods), 6 (business travel), and 7 (commuting) account for 85% of its Scope 3.

2

A manufacturer’s screening reveals that Categories 10–15 are not applicable or immaterial, focusing detailed measurement on Categories 1–9.
