Scope 3 Hotspot Analysis

A Scope 3 hotspot analysis identifies which categories and sources within an organisation’s value chain emissions are the most significant, enabling targeted data improvement and reduction efforts.

What is Scope 3 Hotspot Analysis?

Scope 3 encompasses 15 categories of upstream and downstream emissions, but not all are equally material for every organisation. A hotspot analysis quickly identifies which categories and specific sources contribute the most to total Scope 3 emissions, allowing the organisation to focus its resources where they will have the greatest impact.

The analysis typically starts with a spend-based screening of all 15 categories, using readily available procurement and financial data. This produces an approximate emissions estimate for each category. Categories representing more than 5–10% of the total are considered material and warrant deeper investigation using activity-based or supplier-specific methods.

Hotspot analysis is the recommended first step in the GHG Protocol’s Scope 3 guidance. It prevents organisations from investing disproportionate effort in low-materiality categories while missing the dominant sources. Results guide both data collection priorities and reduction strategy development.

Practical Examples

1

A consulting firm’s hotspot analysis reveals that purchased goods (Category 1) at 45% and business travel (Category 6) at 30% dominate its Scope 3, while waste (Category 5) contributes less than 1%.

2

A manufacturer discovers through screening that raw material procurement accounts for 65% of its Scope 3, prompting a detailed supplier engagement programme.

3

A bank’s hotspot analysis shows that financed emissions (Category 15) are 700x larger than its operational Scope 1 and 2, fundamentally reshaping its climate strategy.
