Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO)

REGOs are certificates issued by Ofgem that prove electricity has been generated from renewable sources, used by suppliers to evidence green tariff claims.

What is Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO)?

A Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) is an electronic certificate issued in the UK for every megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity generated. Administered by Ofgem, REGOs provide a chain of custody that allows electricity suppliers to demonstrate to customers that a specific quantity of electricity came from renewable sources.

Under the GHG Protocol’s market-based Scope 2 method, holding REGOs (or their European equivalent, Guarantees of Origin) is the primary mechanism for claiming reduced emissions from purchased electricity. When an organisation buys electricity on a green tariff, the supplier retires the corresponding REGOs to substantiate the claim.

REGOs have faced criticism for being relatively cheap (often less than £1 per MWh) and not necessarily driving new renewable capacity. Some organisations therefore pursue Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with new-build renewable projects to demonstrate stronger additionality. Nevertheless, REGOs remain the standard market instrument for renewable electricity claims in the UK.

Practical Examples

1

A UK company on a 100% renewable tariff receives confirmation that its supplier has retired 5,000 REGOs to match its annual electricity consumption of 5,000 MWh.

2

An organisation purchasing REGOs separately from its electricity supply matches them to its consumption for market-based Scope 2 reporting.

3

A sustainability team reviews its energy supplier’s fuel mix disclosure to verify that the claimed green tariff is backed by REGOs rather than just the residual grid mix.

How Climatise Helps

Climatise accounts for REGO-backed renewable electricity in your market-based Scope 2 calculation, reducing your reported emissions where green tariffs or direct REGO purchases are in place.
