REDD+

REDD+ is a UN framework that provides financial incentives for developing countries to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, while promoting conservation and sustainable forest management.

What is REDD+?

REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, plus conservation, sustainable management, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks) was established under the UNFCCC. It generates carbon credits by protecting forests that would otherwise be cleared, keeping the stored carbon out of the atmosphere. REDD+ projects are significant in the voluntary carbon market but have faced scrutiny over baseline accuracy, permanence, and indigenous rights.

Practical Examples

1

A REDD+ project in the Amazon protects 50,000 hectares of rainforest from planned agricultural conversion, generating carbon credits from the avoided emissions.

2

A company purchases REDD+ credits that include verified biodiversity and community co-benefits alongside carbon protection.

How Climatise Helps

Climatise helps organisations understand their residual emissions and assess whether REDD+ credits are appropriate for their offsetting strategy.
