Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)

A product carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with a product throughout its life cycle, from raw material extraction through manufacturing, distribution, use, and disposal.

What is Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)?

A Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) quantifies the climate impact of a single product or service unit, expressed in kgCO₂e per unit. It applies the principles of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) focused specifically on greenhouse gas emissions. Standards governing PCF include ISO 14067 (Carbon footprint of products), the GHG Protocol Product Standard, and PAS 2050.

PCFs are increasingly demanded by customers, retailers, and regulators. The EU’s proposed Green Claims Directive and Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) initiative will require substantiated product-level environmental claims. Retailers like Tesco and Unilever are working towards product-level carbon labels.

For carbon accounting, PCFs provide the granularity needed to identify emission hotspots within a product portfolio, compare alternative designs or materials, engage suppliers on specific improvement opportunities, and communicate environmental performance to customers.

Practical Examples

1

A dairy company calculates the PCF of its milk at 1.2 kgCO₂e per litre, identifying that on-farm methane accounts for 60% and packaging accounts for 8%.

2

A clothing brand publishes the carbon footprint of its organic cotton t-shirt as 5.5 kgCO₂e, helping consumers compare with alternatives.

3

A building material manufacturer calculates PCFs for its concrete mixes, demonstrating that its low-carbon blend has a 35% lower footprint than the standard product.
