Paris Agreement
The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty adopted in 2015 that commits signatory nations to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with efforts to limit the increase to 1.5°C.
What is Paris Agreement?
Adopted at COP21 in Paris in December 2015 and entering into force in November 2016, the Paris Agreement is the most significant global climate accord. It requires each signatory to submit Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) — national plans setting out how they will reduce emissions and adapt to climate change. These NDCs must be updated every five years with increasing ambition.
The Agreement’s temperature goals (well below 2°C and pursuing 1.5°C) have become the reference point for corporate climate targets. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) defines “science-based” targets as those consistent with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C pathway. Likewise, net zero commitments are typically framed as Paris-aligned when they follow the trajectory required to meet these temperature goals.
For businesses, the Paris Agreement’s framework drives regulatory action (CSRD, ISSB, SECR), investor expectations (climate risk disclosure, net zero investment commitments), and supply chain requirements (Carbon Reduction Plans, CDP). Understanding the Paris Agreement is essential context for any corporate climate strategy.
Practical Examples
The UK’s NDC under the Paris Agreement commits to reducing economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by at least 68% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
A company sets a 1.5°C-aligned Science Based Target, demonstrating to investors that its emission reduction trajectory is consistent with the Paris Agreement.
An asset manager commits to aligning its portfolio with the Paris Agreement’s goals by 2050, using PCAF methodology to measure financed emissions and track progress.
