Long-Term Targets

Long-term targets are emission reduction goals reaching to 2050 or earlier, requiring at least 90% reduction from baseline emissions as part of a net zero commitment.

What is Long-Term Targets?

Under the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard, long-term targets require reducing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by at least 90% from the base year by no later than 2050 (or sector-specific earlier date). The remaining residual emissions (maximum 10%) must be neutralised through permanent carbon removals. Long-term targets set the ultimate ambition level and inform the transition planning needed to reshape business models, supply chains, and operations.

Practical Examples

1

A manufacturer sets a long-term target of 95% absolute reduction in all scopes by 2045, with the remaining 5% addressed through permanent carbon removal.

2

A financial institution commits to a long-term target of aligning its entire lending portfolio with net zero by 2050.

How Climatise Helps

Climatise models long-term emission trajectories, showing the gap between current performance and the reduction rate needed to meet long-term targets.
