Limited Assurance
Limited assurance is a level of independent verification that provides moderate confidence that no material misstatement exists in reported greenhouse gas emissions, involving primarily inquiry and analytical procedures.
What is Limited Assurance?
Limited assurance (also called “moderate assurance”) is the most common level of GHG verification. The verifier performs inquiries, analytical procedures, and limited testing of underlying data. The assurance statement is expressed negatively: “Nothing has come to our attention that causes us to believe the emissions are materially misstated.” This contrasts with reasonable assurance, which involves more extensive testing and is expressed positively. The CSRD requires limited assurance initially, with planned progression to reasonable assurance.
Practical Examples
A company receives a limited assurance statement over its Scope 1 and 2 inventory, providing stakeholders with moderate confidence in the reported figures.
A CSRD-scope company engages its financial auditor to provide limited assurance over its ESRS E1 climate disclosures.
