Gold Standard
Gold Standard is a certification standard for carbon credits and sustainable development projects, known for its rigorous quality criteria including strong additionality, stakeholder consultation, and sustainable development co-benefits.
What is Gold Standard?
Founded by WWF and other NGOs in 2003, Gold Standard certifies projects that deliver verified emission reductions alongside measurable sustainable development benefits. Gold Standard credits are widely considered among the highest quality in the voluntary carbon market. The standard covers renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste management, and other project types. Gold Standard for the Global Goals (GS4GG) aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Practical Examples
A company purchases Gold Standard credits from a verified cookstove project in Sub-Saharan Africa, providing both emission reductions and health benefits to local communities.
A renewable energy project in India achieves Gold Standard certification, demonstrating additionality and SDG contributions.
