Energy Audit
An energy audit is a systematic assessment of an organisation’s energy use that identifies consumption patterns, inefficiencies, and opportunities for reduction.
What is Energy Audit?
An energy audit examines how energy is consumed across an organisation’s operations — including heating, cooling, lighting, equipment, transport, and processes — and identifies measures to reduce consumption and cost. Audits range from walk-through assessments to detailed investment-grade analyses with measurement and modelling.
In the UK, the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) requires qualifying large enterprises to conduct energy audits every four years. ESOS audits must cover at least 90% of the organisation’s total energy consumption and identify cost-effective energy efficiency measures. While ESOS does not mandate implementation of the measures, the audit provides a clear action plan.
Beyond ESOS compliance, energy audits are a practical starting point for any decarbonisation programme. They quantify the savings available from efficiency improvements, prioritise investments by payback period, and provide the baseline data needed for carbon accounting and target-setting.
Practical Examples
A logistics company conducts an ESOS audit revealing that 40% of its energy is consumed by refrigerated warehousing, leading to investment in improved insulation and more efficient refrigeration units.
An office building energy audit identifies that HVAC systems are running outside occupied hours, and simple scheduling changes reduce energy consumption by 15%.
A manufacturer commissions an investment-grade energy audit that models the financial return of replacing aging boilers with heat pumps, showing a 4-year payback.
How Climatise Helps
Climatise integrates energy consumption data from all sources (meters, bills, sub-meters) to provide the analytical foundation for energy audits, identifying patterns and anomalies that highlight efficiency opportunities.
