Decarbonisation
Decarbonisation is the process of reducing greenhouse gas emissions across an organisation, sector, or economy, with the ultimate goal of reaching net zero emissions.
What is Decarbonisation?
Decarbonisation refers to the systematic reduction and elimination of greenhouse gas emissions from business operations, supply chains, and the wider economy. For organisations, it typically involves three phases: measuring current emissions through carbon accounting, identifying and implementing reduction measures, and addressing residual emissions through high-quality removals or offsets.
The most effective decarbonisation strategies follow the carbon management hierarchy: avoid emissions where possible, improve efficiency, switch to low-carbon alternatives, and only then offset or remove residual emissions. Corporate decarbonisation is increasingly driven by regulation (SECR, CSRD), investor expectations (SBTi, CDP), customer requirements (supply chain carbon reduction plans), and commercial opportunity (energy cost savings, green procurement advantages).
The UK government’s legally binding target to reach net zero by 2050 provides the overarching policy framework. Sector-specific decarbonisation pathways set out the trajectories required for energy, transport, buildings, industry, and land use.
Practical Examples
A UK logistics company develops a five-year decarbonisation roadmap that includes transitioning its fleet to electric vehicles, installing solar panels at its depots, and engaging suppliers on emissions reduction.
A professional services firm reduces its carbon footprint by 40% through a combination of office energy efficiency measures, switching to a 100% renewable electricity tariff, and implementing a sustainable travel policy.
A manufacturing company invests in heat pump technology to replace gas boilers in its production facilities, cutting Scope 1 emissions by 60% and reducing energy costs by £200,000 annually.
How Climatise Helps
Climatise helps organisations build and track decarbonisation plans by providing a clear emissions baseline, identifying the highest-impact reduction opportunities, and monitoring progress against targets over time.
