Corporate Net-Zero Standard

The SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard provides a framework for companies to set net zero targets aligned with climate science, requiring both near-term emission reductions and long-term neutralisation of residual emissions.

What is Corporate Net-Zero Standard?

Published in October 2021, the SBTi’s Corporate Net-Zero Standard is the most rigorous framework for corporate net zero target-setting. It requires near-term science-based targets (5–10 year horizon, aligned with 1.5°C), long-term science-based targets (reducing emissions by at least 90% by no later than 2050), and neutralisation of residual emissions through permanent carbon removals. The standard specifically prohibits relying on offsets for reaching net zero.

Practical Examples

1

A company sets SBTi net zero targets: a near-term target of 42% absolute Scope 1 and 2 reduction by 2030, and a long-term target of 90% total reduction by 2050.

2

A retailer validates its net zero pathway with the SBTi, committing to neutralise residual emissions through permanent carbon removal purchases.
