As of December 2023, a Call For Evidence has been established by The Department for Energy Security & Net Zero, considering Scope 3’s current voluntary status within the Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting process.

What is Scope 3?
Scope 3 covers ‘emissions that are a consequence of the businesses actions, but the source is now owned or controlled’.
These emissions are challenging and complex to report on, due to said emissions being from external sources, along with not being owned or controlled by the business itself. For example, emissions from business travel in rental vehicles.

What does this mean for companies who are required to perform an SECR report?
As of December 2023, Scope 3 is a voluntary element of SECR reporting. This current consultation aims to bring in changes to this from 1 January 2025, are you ready for this submission?
Due to the complexities of Scope 3, time is of the essence. We would advise beginning to compile all information for Scope 3 reporting as soon as possible with this deadline looming. Some companies are yet to decide who In their organisation to make responsible for scope 1 & 2 reporting so Scope 3 will require larger investment and management to keep up with these regulatory requirements.
